TREAD LIGHTLY, MINIMISE YOUR IMPACT &
TREAT MOTHER NATURE W. RESPECT, ALWAYS.

Sustainable and responsible adventures allow for deeper connection to community, culture and Mother Nature. Make ethical decisions to build healthy travelling habits in Australia and across the world!

Fortunately, the majority of Australians acknowledge the reality of climate change and take pride in protecting the natural world by making individual and collective environmental efforts. You have many opportunities to make good choices, impactful decisions and take eco-friendly planet positive action whilst living, working and travelling in Australia.

It's your own responsibility as an environmental custodian to demonstrate stewardship through mindful actions and sustainable choices. It's simple - Look after the land, and the land will look after us.
IT'S PARAMOUNT TO LIVE A LIFESTYLE THAT REFLECTS YOUR POSITIVE BELIEFS & ATTITUDES.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM TIPS:

Protect yourself from the harsh Australian environment.
The sun's UV in Australia is STRONG and renowned for extreme weather conditions across the continent. Wearing the appropriate attire and being prepared on your adventures is imperative. Ensure you ALWAYS wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen - every single day. Carry a re-usable drink bottle and drink plenty of water. Hydrate with electrolytes where possible and eat nutritious food. Pack a raincoat (just incase) and the appropriate protection dependent on your environment; ie. insect repellent! Australian seasons and weather is extremely diverse, so be prepared for your environment and pack accordingly.

Get outside! Connect with Sacred land and Australian wildlife.
Seek volunteer opportunities that contribute to Australian engaged species. Consider animal welfare. Learn about the species you may encounter to better understand their behaviours and conservation status. Avoid using flash when taking photos of animals. Don't feed animals. It disrupts their natural behaviours and diet. Don’t touch wildlife. This includes marine life and live coral. Drive with care, especially at night to avoid injuring wildlife. Choose tours that are environmentally aware and always opt for Indigenous and local guides where possible. Opt for an eco-certified tour where possible. Stay on designated paths.

Forget animal tourism!
Don't abuse animals for human entertainment (crocodile shows, camel rides or paying to see animals in captivity at zoos). Avoid attractions that offer animal rides, performances or interactions that force unnatural behaviours. If you are visiting animal sanctuaries or rehabilitation centres, please do your research and seek their eco-certifications before you visit. Choose operators that contribute to wildlife conservation programs. Consider making a donation to an Australian wildlife organisation to play your part in our collective future.

Reduce your waste, recycle accordingly and avoid single-use plastic.
You MUST minimise your impact on the environment. It is absolutely necessary for our planets’ longevity. Traveling is no excuse to give into unethical-convenience (such as single use plastic, fast fashion, disposable toiletries, over-packing or over consuming. ). At the VERY least, you should own a re-usable water bottle. Fill it with water every day and consume it as often as possible. If you don’t have a reusable water bottle, let this be your sign from the universe! Reduce, re-use, recycle. Hold onto your waste until you can dispose it in a designated area. Being conscious of your own waste is a powerful way to support sustainable travel.

Respect Sacred Aboriginal customs and beliefs.
Research local Indigenous history, customs and protocols before you visit. Choose Indigenous-owned tours, guides and businesses. Click here to support Indigenous businesses online! Support local artists. Buy Indigenous paintings as souvenirs. Invest in Indigenous Cultures and listen to their ancient Ancestral Creation stories and song-lines. Listen to Aboriginal music. Don't remove rocks or shells other objects from Sacred sites or natural places. Do not touch or leave your mark by carving your initials into trees or rocks. Listen and engage. Approach conversations with curiosity and respect. Abide by requested behaviours, such as silence in Sacred places. Recognise the Traditional Custodians of the places you visit.

Swim between the red & yellow flags at patrolled beaches.
Beaches patrolled by lifeguards are the safest to swim. Look for the red and yellow flags and swim between them. If you don't see any red or yellow flags, it isn't safe to swim. This means you should avoid swimming at these beaches.

Respect our beaches, parks and public areas.
Don't litter and leave places cleaner than you found it. Take 3 for the sea!
Minimise your waste and recycle your purchases.

Familiarise yourself with bush-fire safety.
Prevent fires by using designated BBQ pits and abiding by campground rules and regulations. Fully extinguish your ciggie butts and don't leave glass lying around.

Learn about sustainable, biodynamic, organic farming.
Australia’s air quality is top-notch by world standards and we breathe some of the freshest air on our planet! It's no wonder our local farmers & producers have a well-earned reputation for quality produce and innovative production methods. Working on a farm may give you the opportunity to spend another whole year down under!

Support eco-conscious restaurants & taste native flavours!
Australia’s dining scene is in the midst of a revolution. Restaurants are making conscious efforts to implement zero-waste policies and curating seasonal menus with a side of sustainability. Taste your way through Australia's Indigenous Cuisine & Culture(s) by tasting Traditional foods & bush tucker!

Use public transport or use ride-sharing options.
Australia is easy to travel without a vehicle; there's many choices of public transport including buses, trains, trams & ferries. If you do hire a car, do some research to decipher eco-friendlier options. For example, Europcar gives you that opportunity to purchase offsets to help re-grow koala habitat on the Great Ocean Road through partnership with Greenfleet!
