CIRCULAR QUAY

[pronounced ' circular key']

Circular Quay is one of Sydney's transport hubs, located on the picturesque Sydney Harbour. Trains, light-rail, taxis and bus terminals are situated at Ciruclar Quay and it is the main ferry terminal in Sydney. All of the places listed below are in walking distance from Circular Quay, so getting yourself here is a good starting point to explore Sydney CBD and beyond.

OPERA HOUSE

The Sydney Opera House is Australia's most iconic landmark and a masterpiece of modern architecture, recognised world-wide. Opened in 1973, the Opera House hosts world-class performances in music, theatre and dance. Enjoy harbour views, fine dining and immersive guided tours, whether you're catching a show or simply admiring it's beauty, the Sydney Opera House is a quintessential symbol of Australia's creative and architectual brilliance!

HARBOUR BRIDGE

This iconic steel bridge connects Sydney's CBD to the North Shore. Opened in 1932, it is affectionately known to locals as the 'Coat Hanger' due to its unique shape. Visitors can walk, cycle, drive or catch a train across the Harbour Bridge, whilst enjoying the breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour. You can also climb to the top of the bridge on a paid tour, ascending 134 metres in the air with a 360 degree view of Sydney from the top.

BOTANIC GARDEN

The Royal Botanic Garden is a lush oasis in the heart of Sydney, offering harbour views, diverse plant collections and peaceful walking trails. Established in 1816 it is Austarlia's oldest botanic garden and a haven for nature lovers with over 27 hectares of themed gardens, exotic plants and native flora. Enjoy a picnic by the water or join a guided tour to learn about the garden's rich history and Indigenous heritage.

NEW SOUTH WALES

The Art Gallery of NSW is Sydney's premier art institution, showcasing an impressive collection of Australian, Indigenous and international art. Located near the Royal Botanic Garden, this cultural landmark offers free entry to its main galleries, featuring works from classical to contemporary artists.

MUSEUM

The Australian Museum is the oldest museum in Australia, founded in 1827. It is a leading institution for natural history and cultural heritage. It houses an extensive collection of fossils, minerals and Indigenous artefacts, offering fascinating insight to Australia's past. Free for all visitors, you can explore exhibits on dinosaurs, wildlife, Aboriginal Cultures an much more. 

ST. MARY'S

CATHEDRAL

A stunning neo-Gothic church in Sydney's CBD known for its towering spires, intricate stained glass windows and a rich Catholic heritage. Whether you're religious (or not) or interested in architecture, St Mary's Cathedral is must-see spiritual landmark, located close to the Australian Museum. 

HYDE PARK

BARRACKS

Hyde Park Barracks is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in Sydney. Experience the lives of convicts and immigrants through immersive audio tours and interactive exhibits. Discover Australia's colonial past inside this meticulously preserved landmark. Free admission to visitors but I recommend pre-booking tickets online before you visit. 

THE MINT

The Mint, established in 1855, is a historic Sydney landmark that now serves as a museum and event space, offering insight to Australia's colonial past and this history of coinage. 

STATE LIBRARY

The State Library of New South Wales is Australia's oldest library (1826) and a cornerstone of Sydney's cultural heritage. It houses over 6 million items including books (obviously), manuscripts, photographs and maps, offering a comprehensive collection of Australia's international research materials. Situated on Macquarie Street, very close to The Mint, Hyde Park Barracks, the Art Gallery of NSW and the Royal Botanic Garden. 

THE ROCKS

The Rocks is Sydney's oldest neighbourhood, established in 1788. Located near the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, it features cobblestone streets, historic buildings and vibrant markets. Here you'll find a mix of heritage sites, museums, galleries, bars, restaurants, cafes and boutique shopping making it a popular destination for tourists and locals.

CONTEMPORARY

ART

Located in the historic Rocks district, the Museum of Contemporary Art is a leading institution dedicated to exhibiting, interpreting and collecting contemporary art from Australia and all around the world. Housed inside a beautiful heritage-listed building on Sydney's harbour, the MCA features a dynamic program of exhibitions, educational initiatives and public events. 

DARLING

HARBOUR

Darling Harbour is a vibrant waterfront precinct of Sydney, located just to the west of Sydney's CBD. It offers a diverse range of attractions including the National Maritime Museum, the Chinese Garden of Friendship and a multitude of shopping and dining options. Darling Harbour hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, so find out what's on and enjoy the dynamic atmosphere of Sydney's foreshore.  

LUNA PARK

If amusement parks are your thing, Luna Park is situated a short ferry ride from Circular Quay on the North Shore, near the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Established in 1935, the historic park is renowned for its iconic entrance, a huge, smiling face that has become a symbol of Sydney's vibrant culture. Luna Park was recently purchased (December 2024) by a local hospitality company, purchased for a whopping $50 million dollars! The new owners plan to renovate the park, introducing new restaurants, bars and attractions to enhance its appeal as a top tourist destination and entertainment precinct for locals.
